Unleash the WHY to drive meaningful change

Have you ever wondered what can turn a melody into a global movement? At this time of the year, I am listening to one of my favorite Christmas songs.

In 1985, a profound chapter was written in music history, one that resonates with the power of purpose and the WHY as the deeper driving force behind our actions.

The Power of 'Why' in Music and Movements

It began with Harry Belafonte, deeply moved by the famine in Africa, who envisioned an American benefit single. He, along with fundraiser Ken Kragen, initiated the project and enlisted Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson to write the song. Career coaching catalyst offering personalized coaching. The idea soon took flight and set the stage for a monumental creation in music history, marked by a collaboration of some of the era's greatest musical talents, that would become "We Are the World."

The Legacy of 'We Are the World': Uniting Voices for Change

A song that would capture the hearts of millions. The result was more than just a tune; it was a clarion call for unity and compassion in the face of Africa's dire famine. Now, here is the WHY in the making-story of the song:

At the start of the only one day of recording the song, Bob Geldof took the mic and addressed the group. Already a beacon of humanitarian efforts through Band-Aid, he ignited the right emotion and passion in the recording studio with his stirring reminder of the crisis at hand.

He said, "I think what's happening in Africa is a crime of historic proportions... You walk into one of the corrugated iron huts and you see meningitis and malaria and typhoid buzzing around in the air. And you see dead bodies lying side by side with the live ones... In some of the camps you see 15 bags of flour for 27,500 people. And it's that that we're here for."

His words brought home the 'Why' – the deeper purpose that transcended musical boundaries and infused the heartfelt energy of all the voices into the song.

COP28 and the Global Sustainability Challenge

In the spirit of the unifying 'Why' that resonated in 'We Are the World', similar echoes can be heard at this year’s COP28 in Dubai. Yet, one must ponder – is our collective 'Why' in the fight against climate change clear and compelling enough?

As global leaders align their efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with the Paris Agreement, the question is whether this is actually a 'Why' rather than a ‘What’. Does it resonate deeply enough with every stakeholder?

Navigating Complexities in the Path to Sustainability

While the goal is explicit, the path is strewn with challenges and a lack of spirit behind it. Nations vary in their progress, often caught in the tussle between economic growth and environmental stewardship.

The transition towards renewable energy, despite its strides in solar and wind power, continues to face multifaceted hurdles. This complexity not only highlights the need for a more resonant 'Why' but also calls for a provocative rethinking.

Is Our 'Why' in Climate Action Clear Enough?

From my perspective, it's time to amplify our 'Why', making it not just a policy statement but a personal and emotional appeal, a call to action for every individual and entity involved.

Perhaps, the real provocation lies in personalizing this 'Why', making it as emotionally compelling as the plea for unity in 'We Are the World'? Can we only then hope to navigate the complexities of sustainability with a truly collective and impassioned effort, steering us toward a more sustainable and hopeful future?

Amplifying Our 'Why': A Call for Emotional and Personal Engagement

In my organizational workshops and individual coaching, I draw from this legacy of collaboration and purpose-driven leadership. I strive to kindle a fire of understanding and passion for the 'Why'. It's about creating an enduring inspiration that propels action and purpose, resonating with individuals long after our sessions end.

Through storytelling, open dialogue, and reflective exercises, individuals reconnect with their innate desire to contribute positively to the world and to their companies and communities.

We explore the 'Why' behind our actions, understanding that this is what transforms policies into passions, and strategies into stories. We delve into how each small action, each decision, contributes to a larger narrative of change.

Creating a Symphony of Sustainable Actions

As we look towards the future of our companies, it's crucial to remember that our journey, much like the chorus of "We Are the World," requires every voice, every effort, and every heart.

It's about creating a symphony of actions guided by a shared, enduring 'Why'. A chorus that grows louder and more harmonious with each individual who steps up to play their part.
